Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro, Mi Pad 4: everything you need to know

Xiaomi released teasers last week for a June 25 event. That’s today so good news for those avid Xiaomi fans, a new smartphone and tablet are ready for your consumption. That is, if you also live in China. If you may remember, the Redmi 6 Pro with a notched display was teased before the official launch. We saw some pictures and it actually reminds us of the latest phones with the notch from other OEMs such as the OnePlus 6, ASUS ZenFone 5, Huawei P20, and the LG G7. We know similar devices will be announced in the coming months as companies continue to design a truly bezel-less phone.

As with the older Redmi Pro phones, the Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro is going turn heads. The phone already went official with a 19:9 display and a very obvious notch. The Redmi 6 Pro is the very first ever device from Xiaomi with a notch so expectations have been set. It boasts a 5.84-inch screen, 2280 x 1080 pixel resolution, Snapdragon 625 processor by Qualcomm, dual 12MP and 5MP rear camera system, 5MP selfie shooted with HDR and AI Portrait function, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, and your choice between 32GB or 64GB onboard storage.

The Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro is powered by MIUI 9 on top of Android Oreo and a 4000mAh battery. There’s a rear-mounted fingerprint reader, AI face unlock, virtual assistant, dual-SIM support, and the following dimensions–149.33×71.68×8.75mm and 178g (weight). Color options include Sand Glod, Cherry Blossom Powder, Flame Red, Bali Blue, and Stone Black.

Making this particular phone more interesting is the facial unlock feature. It’s not yet perfect but Xiaomi is working on it. The front camera is said to be powerful enough to allow facial recognition. The notch houses the usual sensors but it can be hidden or disabled. An option to hide similar to what the OnePlus 6 and Nokia X6 have is ready here.

Price starts at CNY 999 ($153) for the Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. The 4GB with 32GB and 64GB versions costs CNY 1,199 ($185) and CNY 1,299 ($200). The phone will be available starting tomorrow, June 26.

The mid-range tablet which only costs around $230 already comes with a large 6600mAh battery with 10W charging via USB-C port, WiFi, and Bluetooth 5.0 for connectivity.
