- An FCC listing has revealed the existence of second-generation Snapchat Spectacles.
- The packaging label shows that it’ll be compatible with iPhones and Android devices.
- Don’t expect cellular connectivity, as only Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are mentioned in the listing.
Has there ever been such a rollercoaster of a tech product as Snapchat Spectacles? The device saw a limited initial launch and a ton of hype, but before you knew it, sales tanked. That hasn’t deterred Snap Inc though, as the firm is indeed working on a successor.
The news comes via an FCC listing for the product, calling it a “wearable video camera” in the filing. Now, that’s pretty vague, but documents also specifically call it model “002” and mention the Spectacles trademark.
However, one of the more interesting tidbits is the FCC branding, which features a “made for iPhone” sticker. The sticker also lists compatible iPhones, ranging from the iPhone 5 all the way to the iPhone X. That doesn’t mean it won’t be compatible with Android, though, as we see the Android robot here too.
The packaging label reveals a listing of contents, namely the Spectacles (note the “Model 002” in the top right), charging case and charging cable.
The listing doesn’t yield anything in the photos, but we do see Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi support, as well as a battery listing of 95mAh. And a testing report also confirms that you’ll be pairing the Spectacles with your smartphone.
It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve heard of a second-generation of Snapchat Spectacles. The company is said to be working on a pair of glasses for 2018 and another pair for 2019. It’s claimed that the 2019 model might also feature two cameras for depth effects.
Would new glasses be worth buying though? Our own Joshua Vergara criticised the low video quality and poor battery life of the original, but praised it for being the first “kind of well-executed attempt” in this product category.
