Mobile carrier Republic Wireless is set to introduce a new smartphone that looks more like another smart speaker. The Relay is really a phone but comes with no display, no keyboard, and not even a platform. This is a simple mobile phone that lets you make basic calls. If you’re conscious about your smartphone usage and are thinking the web is too much, take a break from the Internet and see for yourself that you can survive connecting with your peers and family even without the small mobile screen.

Republic Wireless’ Relay is described as a square-shaped puck that works more like a speaker. What makes it unique is the fact that it connects to an LTE network and not over a wireless connection. It may be difficult to be entertained but Relay will be able to share music, games and voice assistance. The button in the middle lets the user speak up. The microphone then picks up the audio.

If you are currently a Republic Wireless subscriber, you can get a unit of Relay and just add to your account. It’s like a modern walkie-talkie that the kids and parents alike will enjoy and find useful. Parents can use it as a device-tracker for the kiddos and as an intercom at home.  The monthly fee is $6.99 for the phone service but the price tag of the Relay phone reads $99.
