  • The Meizu M6s sports a Halo button that replaces Android’s original navigation bar.
  • It’s the first M series smartphone powered by a Samsung Exynos chipset.
  • It has a fingerprint scanner on the right side — same as Sony’s smartphones.

Meizu has taken the wraps off the M6s, the company’s first smartphone with an edge-to-edge display. It measures 5.7 inches, has HD+ resolution, and sports an 18:9 aspect ratio.

The M6s is also the first device from Meizu’s M series that’s powered by a Samsung chipset — the Exynos 7827. It has 3 GB of RAM and up to 64 GB of storage that can be expanded for an additional 128 GB with a microSD card.

The hexa-core Exynos 7872 chip consists of two Cortex-A73 cores for high performance and four Cortex-A53 cores for better power efficiency, plus a Mali-G71 MP1 GPU. While the hexa-core CPU is certainly an key feature of the new M6s, the use of a single core GPU remains as yet unproven. We will need to wait and see the real world gaming performance.

Like Sony’s smartphones, the M6s has a fingerprint scanner on the side, which is something I would like to see from other manufacturers as well. It’s a lot easier to reach the sensor when compared to those located on the back or front of smartphones.

Meizu is highlighting the device’s Halo button with Super mBack features. It’s basically a virtual button on the screen — with a pressure sensor hidden beneath — that replaces Android’s original navigation bar. But users are able to switch between the two at any time.

You can touch the Halo button to go back, press it to go home, swipe up to multitask, and more. Ard Boudeling, Head of Global Marketing at Meizu, showed what the feature looks like in action in a video posted on Twitter — check it out below.

The handset also packs a 3,000 mAh battery that should get up to 52 percent in 30 minutes of charging, according to Meizu. It’s equipped with a 16 MP primary and an 8 MP secondary camera, and runs the company’s Flyme 6 OS that’s based on Android Nougat.

The M6s has a metal body that comes in four colors: black, blue, gold, and silver. The release date and pricing have not yet been announced.
