Trivia fans, rejoice! After months of waiting, HQ, the enormously popular game show app for iOS devices, is finally making its way to Android. HQ’s creators confirmed the game’s long-awaited Android debut on Twitter earlier today, teasing that it will launch as a “nice little stocking stuffer”, which presumably means we’ll see the app arrive on the Play Store at some point over the holiday season.

In case you’ve somehow missed the biggest viral sensation to hit Apple’s App Store this year, HQ is a live trivia quiz show for your phone where contestants compete for real cash prizes. Much like a regular TV quiz show, the game is held at specific times (weekdays at 3pm and 9pm EST, and 9pm EST on weekends), and is usually hosted by Scott Rogowsky – affectionately dubbed “Quiz Daddy” by fans.

Once the game starts, players are asked a series of multiple-choice questions spanning a broad remit of general knowledge topics. Get all of the questions correct and you’ll win a portion of a larger prize pool that is distributed amongst everyone else who answered correctly. Your winnings can then be cashed out via PayPal.

Get a question wrong, though, and you’ll have to wait for the next game. You can’t cheat using a quick Google search either, as each question only shows up for 10 seconds. Think Jeopardy-meets-Twitch and you’ve essentially got HQ in a nutshell.

10 best quiz games and trivia games for Android

Quiz games and trivia games have dominated the media over the last several decades. Hits like Jeopardy, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Family Feud, and Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader have retained …

Anointed by critics as the “Future of TV”, HQ was created by Vine co-founders Rus Yusupov and Colin Kroll who created a new company, Intermedia Labs, after Twitter bought (and eventually shuttered) the pair’s irreverent social video platform.

While the startup endured a series of ill-fated attempts at reviving their fortunes with Hype and Bounce, HQ has quickly become a phenomenon. At its peak, the app has registered hundreds of thousands of players at a time. As a result, HQ has become a permanent fixture in the App Store charts.

This is partly due to the sneaky way in which the app pulls in new players. While getting a question wrong usually spells doom, users can use a so-called Extra Life. These are obtained by convincing your friends to jump on board the app via a referral code.

It’s worth the effort too. So far, HQ has given away thousands of dollars since it launched in August. Should all players get eliminated, the cash prize rolls over into the next quiz. This has seen the overall prize pot hit upwards of $8,000.
